Signs point to a major change in the Subaru WRX STI's next-generation, set for release next year. Although Subaru has not announced a reveal date, it indicates that the 2022 version of its compact performance car will last with an internal combustion engine and move toward electric power plants. A hybrid motor may still be available.
A Complete Overhaul
While the current general Subaru WRX and WRX STI models have traditionally shared the same technological platform, the next-generation WRX STI will most likely move to a completely new one. With the engine overhaul, the next-generation WRX STI may not debut in 2023 as expected.
Reports indicate that the manufacturer may focus on developing the electric engine for use across its model lineup, including vehicles like the Forester, Outback, Ascent, and Crosstrek. Currently, Subaru's only EV is the plug-in hybrid Crosstrek. Subaru will introduce its first fully electric vehicle, the Solterra subcompact SUV, later this year, which you'll be able to view and buy at Northtown Subaru.
Auto Industry Advancements
Subaru officials have indicated that the overall movement toward electric vehicles in the industry has prompted the manufacturer to change course with its performance cars and meet the changing demands of a marketplace showing a greater interests in electric vehicles of all types. Subaru has also indicated that it intends to focus on reducing emissions and complying with government-based figures on fuel economy to combat the rising issue of greenhouses gases.
